What Battle Ground yards actually need

Acreage properties

Once you are outside the city limits, lots get big, driveways get long, and the problems change. Gravel driveways that rut out every winter because they were built as a single layer of rock on soft ground. Standing water across a pasture that needs a swale rather than a pipe. Grading to make a usable flat area out of a sloping five acres. Septic drainfields that constrain where anything heavy can be built — which we always locate before designing, because a patio over a drainfield is an expensive mistake.

In-town subdivisions

The newer developments around Battle Ground have the same story as Ridgefield: compacted builder subgrade, minimal topsoil, and drainage that was designed to pass inspection rather than to work. First-landscape packages on those lots are a large share of what we do here.

Rain shadow, sort of

North county sits a little drier in summer and takes a bit more wind than Vancouver does. It is not dramatic, but it does affect irrigation planning and which plants hold up in an exposed front yard through August.
